You have no idea how hard I’ve looked
for a gift to bring You.
Nothing seemed right.
What’s the point of bringing gold to
the gold mine, or water to the ocean?
Everything I came up with was like
taking spices
to the Orient.
It’s no good giving my heart and my
soul because you already have these.
So I’ve brought you a mirror.
Look at yourself and remember me.

I must confess I don't normally gravitate towards black - it must be something to do with growing up with a mum who was vehemently against the color, black and so I didn't wear black for many years! - but this flower made me sit up and notice it. It's powerful, serene, and beautiful at the same time. Loved the Rumi poem you chose to accompany the image with too, makes me want to revisit his poetry.
Thank you Priyanka! Most Indians have a problem with the colour black don't they? I remember my mother admonishing me for choosing a black sari for a festive occasion. I'm surprised my charcoal drawings are as popular as they are. I've grown to love black over the years and I almost prefer it in images including my own. Storing things I love in my Tumblr is a treat because there is nothing I enjoy more than rummaging through and coming up with a suitable text or quote to partner an image (sometimes vice versa).
I wear black almost everyday! but that comes from working in NYC .. white becomes so dingy. Although I must say when I was in India my clothes never looked better - however they starch and clean whites is amazing! I love the depth you get with black ... mixing it in when you paint changes the feeling of it. You've really captured that here with your flower - I love the complexity of it
A beautiful poem and a beautiful flower. Speaking of gifts, have you read the one titled Gift by Tagore?
Thank you for your appreciation Priya. I hadn't read Tagore's poem so I googled it and read it just now. Very beautiful and inspiring words. Thank you for suggesting it to me.
