Pretty Patchwork
These blankets are made from collected scraps of material by migrant construction workers. They are usually quite a common sight around a building under construction where they hang colourfully on grey cement. The dash dash dash of the stitches adds to the pattern made by the squares of coloured material.
Look at the stitches on the green underside of the blanket in the second picture. Isn't it fascinating how the women have layered the most mundane scraps of material to make something beautiful? The printed bedsheets sold at big stores don't look half this good.
Remember that the women who make these blankets are also part of the invisible workforce that is building Namma Metro.

THe quilts are lovely.... like Japanese Boro textiles. The stitching adds to their beauty.
Beautiful, but what do people actually do with them ??? Are they used at night for sleeping under ??? And you are so right, nothing coming from factories sold in stores could look this good...
Yup Owen, they use it as blankets for sleeping under.
Gorgeous. I must do some pics of these patchwork quilts.

@ Gopal: yes, I remember that pic.
How times have changed. Now the former Slogan Murugan looks at my blog to get all nostalgic about Benglur!
These are lovely!
these are gorgeous Priya.. exactly what I admire and would use ...
... artistic ability to use whatever fabric comes to hand and make use of material no matter how small and to have the imagination to bring them all together... Beautiful.. Thank you... Art just can't be stopped.
why not get these woman to market these? Fair trade, no middle man.
They could send thier children to school, get a better life. No children working on consturction sites.
the possibilities are endless.
@Travel Bug: I know. I am surprised why an NGO hasn't harnessed their talents by now.
I see quilts like this in Delhi - at construction sites. I like your 'dash dash dash.' I have heard it called pick stitching before.
Hi Mridula, I had no idea it was called pick stitching. I know absolutely nothing about needlework, hence the 'dash dash dash'...
Beautiful aren't they!
But, brand name slavery is so rampant, we need another Lincoln!
