I think the proper attitude for a maker toward the masters (in various arts) is humility.Marly Youmanshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02377938366750387442noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-145309565354388638.post-14733150757248291082018-05-02T22:13:25.293+05:302018-05-02T22:13:25.293+05:30Marly, I completely agree with you. It is pretty much why I try to get my students to go look at works of Old Masters. They are called that for a very good reason.Priya Sebastianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16214406782863174055noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-145309565354388638.post-33811633029739384542018-05-02T19:11:56.357+05:302018-05-02T19:11:56.357+05:30Perhaps I was not clear--no doubt! I prefer the ancient modesty of the artist as artisan, and I dislike the Modernist's attitude toward audience. For me, all art has the chance to be good, no matter the category it is given by academics and those who consider themselves to be intellectuals. And "all art" includes illustration.
Marly Youmanshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02377938366750387442noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-145309565354388638.post-57024537055152482122018-05-02T13:59:06.694+05:302018-05-02T13:59:06.694+05:30Thank you Beth. I've done far more and better work since my return than any time ever.

Marly, thank you. I agree with you except that I find enough and more illustration that I would place in the same box that I would "high art".Priya Sebastianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16214406782863174055noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-145309565354388638.post-67600585319887885802018-05-01T22:02:01.114+05:302018-05-01T22:02:01.114+05:30So glad Beth linked--I enjoyed reading your interv...So glad Beth linked--I enjoyed reading your interview a great deal. A great thing about illustration in the past century is that it has maintained clear purpose in a time when much art lost all sense of purpose, many artists became obsessed with the idea of "high" art, and many lost their way.Marly Youmanshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02377938366750387442noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-145309565354388638.post-91372558438430147632018-05-01T19:43:17.325+05:302018-05-01T19:43:17.325+05:30Priya, I loved reading this and learning more abou...Priya, I loved reading this and learning more about your background - I don't think we ever talked about your schooling, for instance. It makes me happy that you decided to go back to India where you would be able to do your work, even with the other struggles, because as you say, the work is primary, and it's what saves us.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
